Today’s stage starts from Mount Ortobene. If you slept in town, you can walk to the starting point by following the signs and digital trail. Alternatively, you can reach the top of Mount Ortobene by bus No. 8 (see www.atpnuoro.it), by cab service (tel. 3687187232) or by car by making arrangements with thehospitalero where you slept. If you don’t feel up to climbing to the top of Mount Ortobene, you can start the stage directly from the city (from the Square of Solitude or the Cathedral) by following the arrows of the Way.
Your destination today is, alternately, Orani or Sarule where you will find overnight accommodations. The contact persons for these two stops operate by coordinating with each other.
Depart from the summit of Ortobene – Start from the second summit of the Trail (Mt. Ortobene 925 mt) to head to the Summit of the Trail (Mt. Gonare 1083 mt). On the pathway leading to CAI Trail 101, you will have a chance to stroke the Siste Viator stone. Following Forestas directions, you will arrive at the little church of Solitude, then, guided by the arrows of the Path, you will cross the whole town of Nuoro feeling the stares and smiles of its inhabitants on you. Leaving the town, you’ll walk along a dirt road, following a path much loved by the people of Nuoro: on a Sunday in March and then on September 8 each year, the town’s faithful make a pilgrimage to Our Lady of Gonare. You will find well-kept farms and sheep and cattle ranches, along with Mediterranean scrub that will make your steps even lighter. At km 23.7 you will find a post with two signs: on the right you will go to Orani for the last 1.6 km, straight on to Sarule for the last 3 km. Along this stretch you will find two gates, but with the possibility of entry for pedestrians: remember to close them again after your passage. If you have decided to sleep in the cumbessias at Monte Gonare (make sure with the walk contact person), still at km 23.7 you will find the arrow indicating on the left “Cammino di Bonaria – Gonare”: you will walk it uphill for another 3 km. Remember to stock up on food and water for dinner, at the top you will not find bars, markets or restaurants.
